Work with families takes the form of individual coaching, facilitation of parent groups in my office or a community setting, and workshops or presentations for large parent groups focused on a topic of interest or a Q & A format. During coaching, parents, family members and/or caregivers discuss areas of parenting challenges within the context of cultural and parenting goals. I teach positive parenting techniques and help families reflect on the meaning of their children’s behavior as well as the role they may play in effecting that behavior. Observations of children and families at home or at school are conducted as needed. Initial appointments are usually one-and-a-half to two hours and follow-up appointments last fifty minutes. Most families find resolution within two to three follow-ups. For a non-exhaustive list of workshops, please see Sample Workshop List.
Mounting recent cutting-edge medical research on the significance of the health of our gut for overall mental and physical wellbeing is demanding the attention of parents, schools, workplaces, health care providers and policymakers. There are specific associations between a well-balanced and diverse microbiome and decreased risk for anxiety, depression, food sensitivities, obesity, autism, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s. This new science focused on the trillions of microscopic bacteria, yeast, and viruses that live in our intestines is shining a light on the importance of the communication system along the brain-gut-microbiome axis. Unhealthy diet and stress can interrupt that system and potentially cause low-grade immune activation in the brain and body. Nutritional and lifestyle changes can optimize the health of your gut and positively affect mood, thinking, and overall health. Learn how to help your family, students, clients and constituents through simple education on the novel idea that food is data for the computer that is the human body.
